A powerful love story from the author of the international bestseller A SUITABLE BOY

Amazon.co.uk Review

Michael plays second violin in an up-and-coming Maggiore Quartet, lives on the north side of Hyde Park, takes early morning dips in the Serpentine, has a French girlfriend named Virginie. But his mind is constantly drawn to his first and only love, Julia, whom he knew in Vienna many years earlier. When he catches sight of Julia on a London bus, he cannot help but pursue her. Vikram Seth's new novel is a gently-paced, multi-layered work, proceeding in short sections which flit from Michael's ongoing search for Julia back to his childhood as a Rochdale butcher's son, his early training and breakdown in Vienna under the tyrannical Carl Kall, and the emotional history of his quartet; while Michael's discovery of a Beethoven trio rewritten as a string quintet acts as a motif for Michael's pursuit of the lost Julia: can Michael recapture the magic of the past, like Beethoven, who deafly transfigured what he so many years earlier had hearingly composed? Seth is quite brilliant at conveying the intense and complex interplay of chamber musicians, in rehearsal and performance (an odd, obsessed, introspective, separatist breed), and manages the near-impossible--to write in 1999 about Art and Love without embarrassment. --Alan Stewart

A beautiful and elegant read

An Equal Music is a beuatifully written and elegant book. The storyline is excellent and the references to music and musicality are extremely emotive. This is a very grown-up read.

Not in the "A suitable boy" league but still very good

I read this book about a decade ago for two reasons. First, I had loved "A Suitable Boy" and second, I love string quartets as it seems to me that the string quartet has a certain (perhaps superficial) likeness to the modern 4 piece band. I remember it as an enjoyable read but nothing special.

beautiful and realistic view of the musical world

This is a stunning book that really sucks you into the world of creative people, classical musicians and the dedication required to create a fantastic performance. The strong emotional ties that develop between performers is beautifully portrayed. There is also a very moving human side to the story too of love lost,a strong desire to turn the clock back and regain what has been lost.

An Equal Music

A beautifully written book; extremely interesting for musicians but the story carries one along even if music is not your forte.Having a deaf partner I appreciated the understanding of the girl's deafness. A love story ; of humans and music. The best book I have read for a long time.

AN equal music

Most poignant love story, beautifully written. A parallel journey into the inner world of a string quartet, hauntingly beautiful music and the tapestry of a love affair not meant to be.

Beautiful hard cover book that arrived on time. So both story and service most satisfactory
  1. Ask no questions and hear no lies.
  2. Monkey see, monkey do
  3. After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile.
  4. Rome wasn't built in a day.
  5. Chance favors the prepared mind.
