What Lurks Beyond?...

This a truly a hidden B-Movie style gem! Another H.P. Lovecraft story starring Jeffrey Combes (who is also in Re-Animator, another Horror delight written by H.P. Lovecraft) which makes with the Horror and Gore pretty much from the get-go!
When an experiment goes horribly right (yes, right) after a new Invention called the Resonator is powered-up, shocking "its" from "the other side" are released and the Inventor, Dr Pretorious meets a rather grizzly end, leaving his somewhat horrified Assistant Dr Crawford (Combes) in a Mental Instution rambling about what attacked him on that fateful night when Dr Pretorious lost his head over the Invention (literally!)
It's also attacking Crawfords brain like a Tumor, so his newly-assigned Psychiatrist and her Bodyguard/Cop Friend are sent to see this Invention in action at the House of the late Pretorious, despite repeat warnings from Crawford that he is going to destroy the Machine the first opportunity he gets. After seeing the Resonator live the Psychiatrist believes she has witnessed a positive breakthrough for Mental Health, and potentially a cure for schitzophrenia, but the Monsters from beyond and the Resonator have other ideas. Will anyone get out sane?
I really enjoy this Movie because it's extremely original, I truly haven't seen anything else like it at this point, so for me it makes it a pretty stand-alone Horror. It's been really well directed and stays interesting and scary all the way through!
Prepare yourself, you never know what's waiting to be found...!!

Just about

Having seen the gross teen porno Reanimator but being a Lovecraft fan as a reader I thought I would try this one,too-Hmmm...Still gross with the addition of an unlikely semi-hero, given Lovecrafts ethnic philosophy as the swarthy victim eaten alive by ethereal bugs, this is still fun for those with a taste for such fun although it was spun from a short tale or smidgen as the director admits...I doubt Lovecraft wrote any trendy S+M into his tale either but he is dead and directors are alive and have audiences to please who would rather party than read,I would guess,so it's a bit eighties Drive-In,but fine if that's your mood-As to the style of the film, garish, gaudy, weirdy, and features some wacky machinery and somewhat creaky eighties animatronic effects, what else? But CGI is still not everything and Stop-Frame,too,has its own weird charm, just as nostalgia and Lovecraft do...The two main players are outstanding and almost make this rather ludicrous screenplay plausible-Let's say your unbelief is suspendable and the berserk ending is,well,A berserk eighties extravaganza of bloody, explosive mayhem with a somewhat surprising gloomy ending and as for extras, they are very, very good and a very worthy addition to the overall package...Lovecrafty rather than Lovecraft but then he was after all,a New England writer,so if anyone should twist him,It would be Amerikas Jan Kees...Fun on several counts and levels and a relative bargain.

This was a Christmas present which I ordered quite late. I was amazed that it arrived not only before Christmas but within a few days. Fantastic - would use again.

Uncut just like it should be

Starring Jeffrey Combs (of Re-Animator fame). A tale of scientists trying to create a machine to see creatures that live in our atmosphere, that are usually invisible to the human eye. And then it all goes amazingly wrong for the two scientists. Blood and guts (or brains) aplenty here. All i can say is watch out for Combs staring into the camera and uttering the words "and it bit off his head like....like a ginger bread man".

A hidden horror gem

From Beyond is only available at the moment in America so you need a multi region dvd to play it. I first seen this film about 15 years ago on a three films for £2 rental and I loved it. It was made in the mid 80s which in my opinion the best cheap horrors were made. What I mean by cheap horror is excessive blood gore and violence with a token pretty girl. The greatest example of these films is Re-animator. This film is by the same director (yuzna) and has the same lead role the incomparable Jeffrey Combs.

From beyond is about a mad scientist who invents a sort of grand set of tuning forks that allow us to see all of the horrible creatures that suppossedly float around us. The problem is they can now see us. The scientist and his assistant (combs) are attacked by the creatures combs escapes but the scientist has his head bitten off. Combs is accused of the murder and is sectioned a radical young doctor decides that he is telling the truth and accompanies him back to the house were it all happened she is given a trusted body guard the legendary Ken Foree(Dawn of the Dead)who seems intent on spoofing Shaft. The problems start again straight away and we have another haunted house shocker on the cards. Not to give away the ending but it is fantastic no hope and no cure. Buy it if you love horror films.
