Amazon.co.uk Review

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his sceptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story. And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity... The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

Princess Bride

Hired this film on VHS back in the late 80s to watch with my wife and daughter and we loved it.Purchased it on DVD as a bit of fun for her birthday, so my wife and I watch it, as you do, to make sure it worked. Loved it even more the second time, stands the test of time, excellent easy watching fun film.We kept this one and got another for my daughter.

Great movie, but region locked

While the movie itself is fantastic, the version advertised here is locked to Region A as I found out to my disappointment. UK buyer beware!
This isn't the first import Blu Ray I've bought, but it is the first one I've been locked out of.
Gutted :(

Fencing, fighting, giants, pirates, revenge and true love

A rollicking good story. A sideways look at the fairy tale genre, gently funny with plenty of action. It is complimented, not spoiled, by having so many stars in the smaller parts.
This is a cult film, but not one that is either love it or hate it, more love it or think it's OK but nothing special. It is good family fun, by which I mean it will entertain the adults as well as the children.
The extra's are entertaining, there are enough, especially for a film made before it was standard practice to film a "making of " show, without being too many to wade through.

As you wish...

I had never heard of this film until two years ago so this review is not coloured by nostalgia.

The film is amazing. It is funny, charming, romantic, knowing and unique. The cast are superb and the script is brilliant. Visually the film is pretty dated but that in no way detracts from the experience.

If you are reading this and thinking 'I dunno...' please just buy it. It has quickly become one of those films I recommend to friends without a second thought.

Great unisex film

I remember watching this when I was younger and I loved it. It is a great movie, it has action, fighting, danger, and a never ending love. Don't let the title put boys off they will love all the action and excitement. Definately worth while!
  1. A woman's work is never done.
  2. reinventing the wheel
  3. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
  4. A fox smells its own lair first.
  5. There is no royal road to learning.
